My first piece of real jewelry, a sterling silver abalone ring, was given to me as a present when I was a child. I was fascinated by the kind of oil slick properties in the cabochon, brilliant colors, and a satiny sheen. How when you turn the item at different angles, the colors change. The abalone cabochon in the bookmark has been sealed with a clear coat, so the patina could be applied, making the colors and patterns even more outstanding. Tiny natural copper beads surround the abalone.
I wove this design with five different weave patterns, which add texture and contrast. I added tiny copper beads surrounding the shell.
I oxidized the copper to an exquisite patina, adding depth and contrast of color in the metal. I then tumbled the bookmark with steel shot; this strengthens the piece and adds a high gloss to the copper.
One of my favorite features of the bookmark is the swirls that grace the end.
Original design handmade with love and dedication by Amanda’s Treasures.
