Ammonite Copper Bookmark

Growing up, my father was a rockhound. Every time we would take a walk, he would stop, pick up a stone and tell us what it was.

Fossils have always been a favorite of mine. As a child, I would feel sorry for the creature trapped in stone. I would wonder what the creature’s life was like. I know this creature would have never guessed that it would be used in art a million years in the future.

I wove this design with four different weave patterns, which add texture and contrast.

I oxidized the copper to an exquisite patina, adding depth and contrast of color in the metal. I then tumbled the bookmark with steel shot; this strengthens the piece and adds a high gloss to the copper.

One of my favorite features of the bookmark is the swirls that grace the end.
